One of your works——Chai, aims to deliver great tea ritual experience. However, different tea culture exist in both western and eastern countires with their own traditional tea sets. Compared to the traditional sets, what is the advantage of this innovative Chai?
Richard:
During the design of Chai, I studied many tea rituals including Japanese, Chinese and Korean tea ceremonies, English afternoon tea and Masala Chai preparation by Indian Chaiwallas. This insight gave the project direction with the aim to incorporate the different aspects of these rituals into one range that allows users to experiment with different teas, brewing methods and involve friends and family by bringing the experience to the table for everyone to enjoy.
The Chai infuser and tea kettle offer an experience to satisfy the user’s involvement throughout every step of the ritual. This is achieved by using a bimetallic mechanism combined with a mechanical timer to monitor the temperature and steeping time which ensures the perfect results for every type of tea.

Did you design Optic, the augmented reality cyclist helmet, out of the reason that you are a riding enthusiast? During your last tour on bike to Southest Asia areas like Thailand, have you picked up some inspirations?
Richard:
The idea behind Optic came from first hand experiences cycling to work and whenever I cycled in busy urban environments. Sometimes, I would find myself in dangerous situations caused by the inability to know what was behind me and this was reinforced when I cycled in some of the extremely busy cities in South East Asia. Optic gives cyclists the visual information to make safer decisions on the road by integrating a heads-up display, front and rear cameras and 360-degree proximity and collision detection. Optic would have allowed me to focus on the road ahead with full awareness of my surroundings and any potential risks plus the augmented reality mapping feature would have been perfect for navigation in the unknown areas on my last tour.

As you mentioned, you have a strategic mind-set and you aim to focus on the bigger picture, whilst ensuring you never lose sight of the details to deliver intuitive and engaging user experiences that embrace the ever-changing role of design. In your opinion, what is the relationship between the bigger picture and the details?
Richard:
Personally I would say the key to designing any successful product or service is to understand the relationship between the bigger picture and the details. At first the focus must be on the big idea and to think laterally, pushing the concept and to fully understand the fundamentals of the project. Once this is achieved, the task turns to executing the outcome and delivery through stages of development and refinement. This process takes the big idea from a thought to a resolved outcome where every last detail has been considered and tested to ensure the user receives the best all round experience.

Your design covers multiple sectors including consumer electronics, medical, furniture, homeware and FMCG. In your opinion, what is design? Is designing a chair the same as designing a cellphone?
Richard:
Design for me, is to have a vision that is driven by a study of human behaviour. For every project the initial stages must be focused on understanding the user’s interaction, then to ask questions that challenge the current systems in place. The questions will change depending on the type of project but having an inquisitive mindset towards every aspect of the topic is essential. The answers to these questions are fed into the ideation stages to spark innovation and outline the next steps of the design process.

Before you work in DCA, the three previous working experiences all last 6 months. Were them part of your career plan? What did you learn from these experiences?
Richard:
Before working at DCA I studied Design for Industry at Northumbria University. During the course I interned at three companies: SKK Lighting, Barber Osgerby and MAP for 6 months each. Each company gave me an invaluable experience within a creative working environment covering multiple sectors and working directly with clients to achieve award winning designs including :
- Kano Computer & Coding Kit, winner of multiple awards including Red Dot, Cannes Lions, German Design Award and Design Museums, Design of the Year Award.
- Bodleian Libraries Chair with manufacturer Isokon Plus. Judged as the winner of the highly coveted Bodleian Libraries Chair Competition for Oxford University.
- Wooden table and bench with manufacturer Vitra.
Each project gave me an experience of a different design process that pushed me to improve my skillset and increase my confidence as a designer to function at a professional level.

What are you in charge of in DCA? Is DCA has any difference from the companies you previously stayed since you have been working here for more than 2 years while the other ones lasts 6 months?
Richard:
DCA was my first job out of University and it had a very different culture to all the companies I had worked for previously as there were over 130 employees covering all design disciplines. My role spanned across multiple sectors including Medical, Consumer, Transport, FMCG, Retail, and concept design and in my second year at the company I began managing projects in the consumer and medical sectors. The role involved relations with clients, organising resources, project planning, presentations, directing brainstorm sessions, ideation, design development and delivery of deadlines. The huge benefit of having all disciplines under one roof meant that an idea can be taken from initial concept through to a production ready design in a very short time period and being a part of this working environment gave me an valuable understanding of every stage of the process.

Do you agree that a designer should have multidisciplinary ability instead of focusing on a specific field?
Richard:
This question really comes down to the goal of the individual but from my experience a designer should have the ability to work across disciplines especially if working in a consultancy. The thought and design process are the most important aspects and this and can be transferred between different disciplines with the addition of specialist collaboration when required. The majority of products are now connected devices which naturally cross disciplines, so being able to adapt to the project at hand is a common requirement of a designer in the modern workplace. Throughout the design process designers need to approach the project from all angles to avoid problems further down the line and ensure the best outcome on every level.

Different countires emphasize design with different levels and the design environments vary as well. As a designer in UK, what kind of ability do you think one should have to stand out from the competition?
Richard:
In order to stand out from the competition a designer needs to show the ability to think of a product as part of a service rather than just a stand-alone object. Many products are now centred on a digital interface with the product designed to facilitate the interaction and many designers are able to produce the physical product but lack the ability to think about the overall system in place. To stand out, a designer needs to show the ability to think about everything, from the bigger picture to details, for the design of the physical product and also for the service that supports it.
