Wanki Kim
Narkii:
As a 6th designer in Korea Design Membership, what are you in charge of?
Wanki:
I accumulated various experiences to realize a dream of becoming a designer after I was discharged from the military service in 2015. Meanwhile, I took a test to be a member of Korea Design Membership organized by Korea Institute of Design Promotion, and became the member of it.
After then, I dreamed of becoming a designer as sharing information and strengths with the members of Korea Design Membership.
Narkii:
What kind of environment for designers does design industry provide in Korea?
Wanki:
There have been more systems to support people in private business, which is for solving unemployment crisis among young people. Those who own products with business value can receive supporting fund for developing their products and other support related to exhibition and working environment.
Though each school has different ways of education, people can receive opportunities to do industrial-educational activities with some companies and experience business after they complete their education.
Among them, I chose Korea Design membership activity which received support related to both of the two from the government, through the activity, I could receive lots of support such as industry-education, exhibition, open exhibition and private business.
Narkii:
Many designers choose to work in companies for experience after graduation while you started your own studio at the very first beginning. What made you decide that?
Wanki:
There are various unexpected problems to turn students' new ideas into products. That's because, having business practice experience at work is more realistic than at school when it comes to accumulating knowledge related to practical business. Product design and private business are other cases. To set up a business, one has to have knowledge about various fields such as design, marketing, management, trade and production, which is because their own know-how and networking are needed to maintain their companies. So, most people think that setting up a business should be after learning practical business at work.
I also run a company named EYE DEA LAB, where I sell products that I designed in students' shoes and do work which I am given through outsourcing. However, there are still many things that I want to experience to see a bigger world, so I dream of working in a company.

Narkii:
Can you introduct us about Eye-Dea Lab? Such as its positioning or philosophy.
Wanki:
EYE DEA LAB
EYE DEA LAB was established in September, 2016. It is located in Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea. The words EYE DEA LAB, consisting of 'eye' and 'dea', which is from idea, means a visually-beautiful design with ideas. EYE DEA LAB creatively designs another value by adding new value to the existing objects or products.
Currently, three products, which are Bird Whisk, Fortune Lamp, DouBloom, are being prepared to be manufactured and on sale.
EYE DEA LAB is so promising that various companies are interested in it and request for outsourcing and educational-industrial activities.
Narkii:
You have taken part in many activities including various exhibitions, academic activities, and competitions, what is the gtreatest thing you’ve learn from them?
Wanki:
I learned so many things through winning prizes 32 times in the lots of contests including domestic open exhibitions, internal and external exhibitions, educational-industrial activities, outsourcing activities, international activities and meetings with many companies. It could be my personal opinion, but I could experience many different things such as each country's culture, tendency to like design, and each company's characteristic, pros and cons and know-how.
In terms of learning design, I was taught so many things that every learning was valuable and helpful for my development. One of the most impressive learningwas the relationship with people. Some people were sincere to me while others tried to take advantage of me by reason of my being a student. That might not be just because I was a student. Some take advantage of the weak while others trust each other with respect. As realizing this fact early, I could see whom to trust and be together, which I think was a great experience to go into the world. There is no such thing as a free lunch. I had a notion, which was 'Give as much as you got or more than that.'

Narkii:
Based on your experience in many International exhibitions, do you think that different countries have their own features or they just have the same trend?
Wanki:
I'll not mention the name of specific country not to make any issue, but I thought that the country varied when they saw the products or designs they liked. Each country had different tendencies to like designs, such as whether they liked cheap product, delicately-designed product which can be used for long, practical product, sexual or characteristic product or modernly-designed product, which I thought derived from culture. So, I think such distinctive designs develop and are acknowledged for their abilities that cannot be matched.
Narkii:
What is your hobby? Do you get inspiration from it?
Wanki:
I like reading books about design and going to the department store. Not to be one step behind in the world of ever-changing design trend, I read books about design, study designs in the spotlight, go to the department store to see popular items of the year and to study trendy colors and fabric materials in fashion stores because I can learn and have fun a lot there.
Narkii:
You are a young designer, what is the direction in design that you are heading to?
Wanki:
The way to designing that I am aiming for is not certain yet. So, I keep studying and learning. I like to be a designer who makes great designs and can hear people saying that they love my designs on the street or in other places.
