Does the rationality in math and IT area to some degree limit your design or facilitate it?
Natalie:
There is no connection between them. Frankly speaking, design is a very rational area. It is always helpful to remember that an object is creating to be used.
Narkii:
Since you say that design is a very rational area, do you believe that there is sensibility in it? Why?
Natalie:
In my opinion, a good design ideally combines a large number of aspects - manufacturability, environmental friendliness, feasibility and so on. But for users, the two aspects are most important - it is a function performed by an object and emotions it causes. So I think that it is very important to try to evoke some feelings, associations by interaction with an object.

As you mention, your math education and years of working in IT area gave you a deep sight on things, on the essence of their beauty, can you explain it?
Natalie:
It is hard to explain, so accept my apologies for the long and approximate answer. From the school course of mathematics, everyone knows about the Fibonacci sequence. It is also widely known that many things in nature are created using this sequence because it reflects the principles of natural growth of whatever. There is possible to find large number of regularities connected with the golden section in a structure of a human body. The golden section and Fibonacci sequence are related concepts because the golden section is the math limit of multiplier in the sequence. We used to perceive nature as something beautiful as well as the principles on which it is constructed and things created in accordance with these principles. So the concept of beauty is based on mathematics. If you dig even deeper, the concept of beauty is based on the optimum, and mathematics is the language by which these principles of an optimum can be described. It is just one example, but combination of three different aspects in one concept fascinates me. As designers, we are trying to copy nature. Therefore, for me design is also about this, about a search for a solution that simultaneously connects many aspects in one subject.

Besides the insight on beauty, are there any other impacts that you ten-year experience as an IT-architect bring to your design?
Natalie:
First of all I would like to say that IT-architecture is design as such. Just it is not physical things design but design of software systems and connections between them. Secondly, now it is time when IT-technologies are used more and more in our life. If earlier an ordinary person encountered IT only using specialized gadgets, now, with the development of the Internet of Things, surrounding things as home appliances, lamps, furniture and so on become such gadgets controlled by software. So I think that the ability to navigate in IT-world is a big advantage for designers.
Narkii:
What kind of role does geometric element play in your design?
Natalie:
For me geometry is a constant source of inspiration. It has not just abstract beauty as usual in math but also a visual expression of it. Therefore, it is particularly valuable.
Narkii:
Usually, what is your design process? Which part do you consider the most important?
Natalie:
It is really depends. Sometimes I can imagine the whole design in my mind without any sketches. Sometimes I have just a general idea and I make it detailed by 3d modeling or sketches or mock-ups. But first part – when idea come to my mind is definitely most important.
Narkii:
Now you work as an individual designer, do you have a specific direction in design?
Natalie:
I was engaged in the design of furniture and lamps. But this is not a limitation, it is possible that in the future I will design something else.
