Narkii:
How did you become a designer?
Igor:
Since studying in the school which was focused on math and physics I loved to draw and paint, to make craft things taking lessons in art school at the same. Looking back now I think the idea to become a designer appeared on the intersection of these activities I really loved. I passed exams to Ural State Academy of Architecture and Arts to both, architecture and design, and have chosen industrial design in the end.

Design of lighting fixtures holds a big part of your experience. What attracts you most in this area?
Igor:
Nowadays most commonly developed technology is LEDs, which due to its properties drops down strong requirements of previous technologies allowing to design very flexible solutions. Lighting presents as very wide variety of applications, shapes, materials etc. As well, there a bunch of technologies and concepts, like IoT, smart house, etc. bringing lighting to a new level: it becomes a deeply integrated subsystem of contemporary space, so when making a design you should think of many things as a complex system. All this makes every new project different and interesting.
Dark Side
Narkii:
Some of your works like OLED Lighting are embedded with edge-cutting technology. Is your design think technology-oriented?
Igor:
Of course, it’s very inspiring if you have touch with a brand-new technology. Working with that gives more abilities to find some kind archetypal meaning, which can sustain in the future, because there are less number of analogues and more chances to be a pioneer.
But, I wouldn’t say I'm interested in technological projects only. Each project requires something new in understanding and developing, even it is traditional area. I think every project starts with some usual technics in the end goes with it should go own methodology: it’s very interesting to find the right reasons for new object to exist, to understand the difference with all the other things, and this should not always being a function of new technology.
Narkii:
When you start a new project, what is your typical design process?
Igor:
Usually, design process adapts for project’s inputs: what information was already found before, sometimes there is a prototype or a mock-up from mechanical engineer, electronics, what are expectations for output, time limits, etc. But, typically, for client projects the starting point is design research, checking the existing products, trying to catch the main features and historical background. If the project is initiated by myself, it may be a few sketches or rough 3d models for the beginning to batch the idea, which was already generated by previous experience.
Narkii:
Is there a standard in all of your works? What kind of designers do you expect yourself to be?
Igor:
It seems by this moment I have no any standards or “rules of thumb”, maybe it is easier to define for someone onlooking my works if there is a common line.
I can say that usually I’m interested in understanding and controlling all the project elements, digging deeper for each connector, component or every detail potentially making sense, at the same time keeping in mind the base concept and whole process. I believe it is the key for good result.
Narkii:
What is your hobby? Do you get inspiration from it?
Igor:
Science fiction and nonfiction: outer space theme is very inspiring. It combines many: futuristic vision, social and technological trends, alternative paths of evolving society, etc.
Travelling is also important thing to provide your mind with new impressions, ideas and keep it freshy and sharp.
Space travelling is a combo! :)

Narkii:
What types of challenges have you faced as a designer?
Igor:
There are many of them, and it is easier to discuss challenges on some specific projects, wherefore each one has its own. As example of technological issue having impact the final design I can mention Motion OLED project for Lighting Technologies. While I was working on ideation of this fixture there were several materials advised to produce it. For the first few samples an acrylic solid surface material was chosen. The concept feature is a very thin seamless design, which should be impossible to do using usual LED technology to highlight advantages of OLEDs. Acrylic material allowed to stake two case parts into one body due to glue which is the same material. But using of this material cause two challenges. The first was milling process, because typically this material is used for much thicker objects. And the second problem related to material transparency: when light goes from a source through a thin case wall an inside geometry got visible. This was solved by covering places for light sources with opaque material.
If to try to catch some generalized issues, I think there is always a wide group of problems connected to field of teamwork, communication with manufacturer, etc., when trying to bring out basic concepts through the development process and trying to synthesize different opinions into one product. And of course, to try to keep myself as objective as possible.
